Our Clubs and Activities
Girls on the run is a nonprofit program for 3rd-5th grade girls that encourages positive relationships through emotional, social, mental, and physical development. It is a 10 week program guided by our principal and fellow volunteering teachers to help girls realize their full potential. They learn to support others, make new friends, and gain self esteem through healthy habits.

Robotics 2019 - Mrs. Putman & Mrs. Smith
This was the first time Mrs. Putman and I had taught Robotics and it was a fun and challenging adventure. We hope to teach robotics next year and have a longer timespan with students and the club.
Robotics 2019 began October 16th and was every Wednesday from 2:45pm-4pm. This club has been brought back through McDowell Robotics with rules and standards based on First Lego League. Students learn about different problems in the world based on a set theme. This years theme was CityScapes which looked at problems in cities like traffic jams, pollution, waste, construction, etc. We did not participate in FLL as a school but we did still go by the standards and let students get a feel for how it will work if it is picked up in the 2020 school year and they go on to compete with other schools. We made a map, built the robot, learned about the coding process to work the robot and how it is different than JavaScript, set obstacles for the robot, had to think of challenges for ourselves and the robot, and did research-based projects on the agreed subject Pollution. 3rd grade students also learned how to properly do research and cite work and pictures. Students had to learn how to debug the robot, work out problems, find the right research, figure out ways to improve their hometown pollution, learned to work in teams and help teach eachother the ways of Robotics.
