Derrick McGinnis
I am an Old Fort native serving the citizens of McDowell County from the Old Fort seat on the
McDowell County Board of Education.
I graduated from McDowell High School in 1995, where I was very active in the NJROTC
program and exhibition drill team all four years. Upon graduation, I worked nine years at Coats
American as a welder mechanic in the maintenance department. During that time, I attended
MTCC as part of a reimbursement program through my employer. I earned two Associate’s
degrees in Industrial Electronics and Industrial Maintenance in addition to a Welding Diploma.
In 2004, I was accepted to Appalachian State University Walker College of Business. I graduated
in 2008 with a BS in Business Management and a Minor in Criminal Justice. I worked in this area for two additional years, but with much prayer and consideration, the Lord led me to enter
the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at MTCC. In 2011, I graduated from BLET. In
2012, I was hired as a jailer at the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office. Almost a year later, I
became a sworn Deputy on night patrol for 3.5 years and nightshift patrol supervisor lieutenant
for another 3 years. I accepted my current position of Detective in 2020. In 2024, I earned my
certification as general instructor of criminal justice through the NC Criminal Justice Training
Standards Commission. I work as a part-time BLET program instructor at MTCC.
I am a born-again Christian and attend Lackey Town Baptist Church in Old Fort.
I am honored to serve the students, teachers, and staff of the McDowell County School system.
