North Carolina Read to Achieve Accountability Measures Process

Per 115c-83.1J, local boards of education shall annually publish Read to Achieve district-wide results, which show the progress of reading proficiency for a district's 3rd grade students. The McDowell County Board of Education will meet at 6:00 PM on Monday, September 14, 2015 in the Board Room of the Central Office, 334 South Main Street, Marion, NC. This is a work session, no action will be taken.

Substitute Training for Head Start and Early Head Start

On Friday, September 11, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., there will be a training session for anyone interested in substituting in the Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms (ages 6 weeks to 5 years). Applicants must be 18 years or older, have a GED or high school diploma, and submit to a pre-employment drug screen. The pay is $8.75 per hour.

Interested individuals must attend the training session of approximately 2 hours, and should bring their driver’s license and social security card with them. Even those who are substitutes for the school system are required to attend to be eligible to substitute for Head Start, as this training is specific for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Link Crew Freshman Orientation

Over 300 freshman attended the Link Crew Freshman Orientation held today at MHS. Link Crew is a high school transition program that welcomes freshmen and helps to make them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their high school experience.

German Partnership Meeting

There will be a meeting for all Juniors & Seniors interested in participating in our German partnership with Duborg-Skolen Thursday, September 3rd at 6pm in the CTE Conference Room. This is for anyone interested in hosting a German student for a week in November and/or traveling to Germany in March. Parents should also attend this meeting. Students who traveled last year are required to attend.

Elementary Students Get Free Admission to Titan Game

This Friday night, to celebrate the beginning of school, McDowell High School invites all McDowell County Schools K-5 students to attend the first home football game of the season free of charge. No ticket or pass is necessary for elementary students. Just tell the gate keeper which school your child attends and he or she will be admitted to the game.

So come on out as our very own McDowell Titans take on the Avery Vikings. Kickoff is set for 7:30. We hope to see you there.

We will host a Middle School student night on September 18 when we battle the Owen Warhorses.

McSmiles is a FREE part time preschool program with classrooms located throughout McDowell County. We invite you to join us on the McSmiles Bus for a fun event and the opportunity to learn more about free preschool programs in your community. There will be pizza, free books, door prizes, and lots of fun. We will host these information sessions from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm at the following locations:

Sugar Hill-Montford Cove Fire Department on August 10
Woodlawn Fire Department on August 11
Dysartsville Fire Department on August 18
