The 2014-2015 school year is the 16th year that Operation Backpack has provided school supply assistance to students. The project, which relies on donations from the community, outfitted over 600 students during Summer Distribution.
This assistance was only possible because we live in such a giving and caring community! THANK YOU!
If a student needs supply assistance during the school year, they need to talk to their school counselor or Principal and we will try to meet the need.
Originally organized in 1998, the goal of “Operation Backpack” is to outfit all underprivileged children in McDowell County Public Schools with a new backpack and school supplies. Although the majority of the supplies are distributed to students a few weeks before they return to school from summer break, “Operation Backpack” is a year-round program. Supplies given to students include, but are not limited to, Backpacks, 3 ring binders, notebook paper, spiral notebooks, pocket folders, erasers, ballpoint pens, pencils: #2 & colored, 24 count crayons, glue: bottles & sticks, safety scissors, markers, and pencil boxes/pouches.
Thank you for your interest in assisting the Operation Backpack project.

Why be a Volunteer?
It's not for the money, it's not for fame.
It's not for any personal gain.
It's just for love of fellow man.
It's just to send a helping hand.
It's just to give a tithe of self.
That's something you can't buy with wealth.
It's not medals won with pride.
It's for the feeling deep inside.
It's that reward down in your heart.
It's that feeling that you've been a part
Of helping others far and near,
That makes you be a Volunteer!
